Excerpt from Study of the Earth: Readings in Geological Science

We have reason to believe that the earth has been undergoing a long and complex development, proceeding from a comparatively homogeneous and simple structure to one much more complex. Some five billion years ago, there was only a cloud of matter in the form of dust and gas. Later, an earth gradually evolved, and still later oceans, continents, and a primitive atmosphere formed. The first lifelike structure gradually developed, eons ago, from comparatively complex minerals. And a human animal appeared only an instant ago in geologic time, the improbable product of an incredibly long sequence of ancestral events which began with the appropriate-sized cloud at a certain distance from a star.-such are the broad but imperfectly understood outlines of the modern evolutionary View of the world, much of whose development has come through study of the earth.
