H E publifhers of fuch colleéti ons, as that Which is here of fered to the public, are generally confidered as dull tafllefs men, who feck no farther merit in a paper than that of bein g old or fcarcely legible they have, however, their pretenfions to literary fame; and, indeed, thofe pretenfions are fo moderate, that it is hard to rejeét them altogether. To invention, to accuracy of com pofition, or to elegance in fiyle, they can offer no claim; they are not hi-a fiorians, they only prepare materials for hifiory: they chufe out blocks. From the qttarry, and haying, with much patience and toil, brought them above ground, they leave them there to be poliihed and arranged by more able artifis.
