The only hitherto known methods of pro curing food being through the agency of the soil, the strong and the cunning have, from the earliest ages, been continually devising the means of possessing individually as large por tions as possible under the name of private property. The earliest possessions were ro cured and maintained by the sword, wie ded by the strong-bodied against the weak-bodied. Subsequently the strong-minded and cunning acquired possession by chicanery practised on the ignorant, and both classes of appropriators called their possessions rights; but it is clear that it could only be the right of power, and any stronger power than theirs might with equal right dispossess them. This is and was repeatedly done by force, amongst uncivilised and half-civilised people, and was commonly the case in the feudal ages, when the sword retook what the sword had taken. In after ages the same rocess was frequently aecom plished under t e form of law but no human law could abrogate the laws of nature, there fore, they are but sheep and asses who seek out security in parchments.
