Nernst's work appears to indicate that the percentage which does unite is a function of the temperature only; His work was done as follows. Dry air was passed through a aabidium vessel which was shaped like a pipette. The vessel was maintained at a constant temperature by means of an electrically heated furnace. The gases were led from.the reaction chamber by means of a small cooled capillary. The cooled gas was then analyzed and the pronortions of nitrogen, oxygen, and mitric oxide at equilibrium obtained. 43200 calories are required to form two moles of nitric oxide from.the elements, then according to vent Hoff's princinle, an increase in temperature will cause the formation of nitric oxide, that is assuming that the above reaction is a surely thermal one.
