Inhaltsangabe

As a teenager Lawrence Daze witnessed the 1967 Detroit race riots and went on to become one of the first black drug kingpins in Motown history. When the federal heat grew too hot in the early 1980s, however, Lawrence and his business partner Freddy Lipton orchestrated a successful disappearing act, living anonymously on the opposite side of the state for decades. Fast forward to the present. Gravely ill and tired of living in seclusion, Lawrence returns to Detroit against Freddy’s wishes only to find a city he no longer knows and a granddaughter who wants nothing to do with him. Enter Butch Riley Cousins, the man who murdered Lawrence’s only son years earlier. A desperate psychopath, Butch has his own reasons for coming home to Detroit, all of which center on Lawrence and his brilliant granddaughter, Lamarra Washington. Lamarra’s a graduate student in history at the University of Michigan and wants more than a dry career in academia. She dreams of making Detroit history popular for the masses via podcasts and movies and realizes she has a big story the moment her elusive grandpa shows up on her doorstep. Lawrence wants to make up for lost years. Lamarra resents his late approach but sees her grandfather’s incredible life as ideal source material for a documentary film. Reality sets in for Lamarra when Butch kidnaps her in her childhood home in posh Bloomfield Hills. Butch, a one-time federal snitch, demands millions from Lawrence in exchange for Lamarra. Butch claims he’s owed the money from the years he spent running the Detroit drug trade with Lawrence’s son and will stop at nothing to get the cash he knows exists. Now it’s a race against time. Lawrence loves Lamarra and is determined to save her. He plans on eliminating Butch but wonders how to do it in a city that feels more like a foreign country to him. And then there’s Freddy. Unlike Lawrence, Freddy is healthy and committed to solving their problems in a way that protects their identities and avoids attracting unwanted attention. As for Lamarra, she’s a fighter and does everything she can to escape Butch’s violent ways. After a deadly showdown on the abandoned streets of Detroit, she finds herself working with Lawrence and Freddy to take down Butch for good. But as she and her grandfather grow closer, they’re forced to reconsider their original plans when it comes to the movie, the money, and the evil Butch Cousins. That’s when the real nasty stuff begins, culminating in a Friday night grand finale featuring a legendary hand-carved custom Cadillac casket buried deep within a Woodward Avenue cemetery, all of this occurring on the evening before the twentieth annual Woodward Dream Cruise, the world’s largest one-day automotive event.
