His wife is about to give birth to their first child and Strang's philandering is now less a problem. Then he is involved in an intrigue by virtue of a few conversations with an urban explorer. The urban explorer claims to have uncovered a trail of torture and experimentation on patients once confined in one of London's old asylums. The urban explorer's evidence leads him to the sinister former imperator of an esoteric order. Against his better judgement Eden Strang is drawn further into matters which do not directly affect him, but are configured to destroy him.
