Inhaltsangabe

Cyprus has been partitioned for 42 years after the 1974 Turkish invasion which followed a Greek coup d’ etat in Cyprus which resulted in Greek control of Cyprus and setting up of a pro-Greek controlled government. The Turkish invasion only 5 days after the Greek coup was an attempt to prevent the creation of a “small Greece” in the whole of Cyprus in the south part of Turkey. In fact it created a “small Turkey” in the northern part of Cyprus. The current state of affairs is problematic and abnormal and 42 years of partition have created “new Turkish realities” in Cyprus. In fact Northern Cyprus is now a completely Turkish province with no signs of its Greek characteristics and old Greek-Cypriot inhabitants. However a solution based on a Bizonal, Bicommunal Federation will probably be far worse than the current problematic situation. A new approach to the Cyprus problem is needed and this requires new ideas based on realism, common sense but also historical vision. The current option is either hard partition or soft federal partition with serious possibilities for new problems and dangers.
