I am aware that in the following pages I have made many statements and offered some criticisms upon our modern missionary methods which are calculated to arouse controversy, but I earnestly hope that no such statement or criticism will be allowed to obscure the real object of my inquiry. I have instituted comparisons between the Apostle's method and that of our own day, simply in order to enforce the lessons which, I suppose, we may learn from his practice. If I have been mistaken in my statements concerning our modern methods, my error can be easily corrected by many witnesses. But what is of the first importance is that we should gain a true understanding of the real character of the Apostle's practice and of the principles upon which it was based.

The questions which I have raised are questions of profound importance to-day. We are beginning to study seriously the principles upon which Foreign Missions should be conducted. The time is ripe for a reconsideration of our methods. In any such reconsideration, the study of the methods employed by the greatest of all the Teachers of the Gentiles should take the first place.
