This is the most comprehensive study of Mende Art and Ritual covering 12 ceremonies and celebrations. Each of these are illustrated with field photographs. The significance of the forms and actions are discussed. Mende culture has many examples of complementary opposition such as Beauty/Ugly, Male/Female, Village/Bush. This book explores how this creates dynamic vitality. This is based on years of study of Mende art and culture which started with my field research between 1971 and 1978. A catalog of works by 15 identified artists and 28 regional styles is included.
