Sam Hook is a young physicist working at CERN, just outside Geneva, Switzerland. His career is in good shape until it all goes horribly wrong when his experiment is destroyed in a fire. There is evidence of arson. Fearing for Sam's safety, he is sent away for two years to work as a visiting university professor in the US. Sam has a series of adventures in Geneva, Boston, Moscow, Cape Town and Newport News. He comes up with the idea for a new spacecraft propulsion system and collaborates with NASA to test it. The test appears to be successful, but has catastrophic consequences. This is a slightly exaggerated, authentic glimpse at the hectic life of a particle physicist.
