Raiders of the Lost Shaker of Salt - Volume One... Come with me on an adventure through Central America where you will get to meet a fun group of people who became close friends after sharing some life-changing experiences together. Plunge into the cool clear waters of Mexican cenotes, discover Mayan ruins, get lost in the thick jungles of Guatemala, explore the reefs off the coast of Belize all in preparation for a pilgrimage to the Parrothead Mecca in Key West. Take a sneak peek... Miguel fired up the bus and with its usual cough and splutter we were off down the road. We turned right not long after leaving the Belize side of the border crossing and were thick in dense swampy land on a dirt track. The grasses on either side of the road were green and lush and about two meters high. What lurked in those waters I didn't know and I wasn't in that much of a rush to find out. We continued down the track for a few hundred meters and Alonso said something to Miguel. Before we knew it the bus was attempting to do a three point turn in a section of the track that was barely wide enough for us to drive on. With a steady pace a police vehicle headed towards us from further up the track as we were attempting to change direction. The three point turn was painfully drawn out and took around six or eight manoeuvres before we were clear of sliding off the track and being bogged, and the police vehicle continued approaching. They didn't have any flashing lights on, yet. Foot to the floor Miguel kicked up a puff of dust and sped off as quick as the bus would take us. I thought about the fact that Alonso had just bribed the Officers at the immigration facility to not have the bags checked. Were we all about to appear on Banged Up Abroad the Belize Special Edition? The police vehicle picked up their pace and the lights came on. Before we knew it they were right on our tail. Miguel didn't slow down and kept his foot firmly on the accelerator. We could make out the faces of the Officers through the back window of the bus and they did not look impressed as they blasted their horn. I wondered if they would let me send a letter home to explain where I was and what was going on once they caught us. My letter would read; Dear Dad, it wasn't my fault that I ended up in a Belize prison. Our guide bribed the Officials at the border crossing so our luggage didn't get taken down off the top of the bus to be checked. When we left the border crossing our driver tried to outrun the police in our bus. We didn't make it very far before they caught us. I didn't have any alcohol, fruit or vegetables with me but I'm still in solitary confinement and getting one meal a day. They said the Australian Embassy had been contacted and will come to visit to review our cases very soon, but that's what I've heard for the past three months when I ask the Belize Officials what is going on. If you can contact them from your end it would be a great help. I hope you are well. Love, Matt. What would probably leave in that letter after censorship would read as; Dear Dad, I'm in Belize. I hope you are well. Love, Matt. I started to wonder if there was something that the Officer who quizzed me earlier had noticed or suspected. I didn't think I looked like a dodgy character or that I fit the profile of a drug mule but my paranoia was going nuts at this point. Please note: This book is the English text version.
