Occult simply means "hidden", although now the word has taken on darker overtones. But those who first described themselves as occultists were seeking the hidden face of God in everyday things. The French occultist calling himself Papus sought to provide a list of sources for his contemporaries to aid them in this eternal search. He also describes the frustrations faced by those people who tried to bring a spiritual perspective to the sciences. Indeed, Mme Blavatsky and the Theosophists, who are mentioned with admiration by the author, would soon spark a worldwide movement of such "scientists of the spirit." Drawing upon eastern religion and building on western occultism, these groups were the forerunners of the modern New Age movement.
