The mentality that has produced pilots who ‘fly’ drones over the Middle East while sitting at a control console at Central Command Headquarters in Florida should concern the American Public. So should the sloppiness, inattention to detail and an almost blind acceptance of where our tax dollars go. Whether or not you accept the premise of this book, consider a few points. Think of all of the systems that have deteriorated in recent years. Consider also the public servants charged with keeping those systems intact. Then contemplate the billions of dollars allocated to the military each year. Does anybody really know where they go or what purpose they fulfill? And is the taxpaying public, to any degree, aware of the complexity of the systems purchased by these funds? Next, ask yourself if the technicians and engineers who maintain our defense systems are any more questioning or competent than the technicians and engineers who maintain interstate highways, bridges or power plants? Think about the aging systems build decades ago and left on shelves in poorly maintained or even possibly forgotten facilities. Who maintains them? Who is responsible for them? When they are no longer needed, does anybody deactivate or dismantle them? Finally, are we living in a fools' paradise, unaware of the dangers left behind by decades of the incompetent and corrupt who are responsible for our security?
