This book is about Ross Winans and family. He was involved in the earliest railroad activities in the United States, from the beginning. He improved and developed a series of locomotives, eventually building his manufacturing facility into the largest in the world. He vigorously enforced his patents rights. He invented and build a series of unique Cigar ships, which influenced Jules Verne's concept of the Nautilus. He and several of his sons were multi-millionaires by the middle of the 19th century. He was involved in controversy at the beginning of the Civil War, and was arrested twice. He was involved in a secret weapon, the steam cannon. He served as water commissioner for the City of Baltimore, build worker's housing, and ran a soup kitchen. He wrote religious tracts. He and his sons were involved in the St. Petersburg to Moscow railroad project for 25 years, almost bankrupting the Russian government. He delivered over 300 locomotives, and numerous freight and passenger cars to the B&O, and other railroads. The book contains a failure analysis and an economic analysis of his Camel locomotives, and traces each of their deliveries. The book has a list of his and his sons patents, and an extensive bibliography.
