A research project is the culmination of many months, and sometimes years of study and work, so it’s hardly any surprise that many medical students, junior physicians and fellows feel overwhelmed when faced with a required research project. On top of this, the idea of beginning a project only to discover that it is not feasible for one reason or another—too much or too little data, unreliable variables, or similarity to work that has already been published—can make choosing a research project begin to feel more like a proverbial nightmare. However, many esteemed doctors and researchers produce studies and papers with seeming ease, so there must be a secret to developing a successful research project without falling into the aforementioned traps that leave so many spinning their wheels. After years of watching resident physicians struggle with their required research projects, become frustrated or worse, embroil themselves in unfruitful research, I developed a four-part lecture series on “How to do a research project” to aid them in selecting and developing successful studies and producing publishable research. Due to the response I have received, I then decided to turn the lecture series into a book.
