Inhaltsangabe

When mission goes wrong, what does forgiveness look like? A missionary reflects on the meaning of forgiveness by telling his story of “friendly fire.” He finds that forgiveness is not making someone pay when we are wronged. It cancels the debt they owe us to right that wrong. Forgiveness does not deny the past. Forgiveness does not deny feelings. Forgiveness does not deny time. Forgiveness does not deny collective responsibility. Forgiveness does not deny boundaries, therefore it is not synonymous with reconciliation. (This is particularly pertinent when trust has been broken.) And finally, forgiveness does not deny justice – such as workplace grievance and disciplinary procedures. However, having framed the issue in terms of workplace bullying, he further finds that felt betrayal at the organization illuminates the breadth of the issue; and the psychoanalytic concept of projective identification illuminates the depth.
