Fables in Slang (English Edition) by George Ade is a sparkling collection of witty, streetwise moral tales that turns the traditional fable on its head. Instead of solemn lectures, Ade delivers sharp humor, quick dialogue, and a distinctly American vernacular that captures the energy of everyday life and the absurdities of human nature.
First published in 1899, these fables use slang and satire to expose timeless truths about ambition, vanity, greed, romance, and social climbing. Ade’s gift is in making the “moral” land with a grin—his punchlines are clever, his observations are keen, and his characters feel vividly drawn from the bustling world of turn-of-the-century America.
Whether you’re discovering Ade for the first time or returning to a classic of American humor, Fables in Slang offers brisk, entertaining reads that still feel surprisingly modern. It’s a perfect choice for readers who enjoy classic comedy, literary satire, and short pieces that deliver both laughter and insight in just a few pages.
