The readings in Problems in U.S. History represent diverse issues and interests. These selections give students the opportunity to experience the perspectives of different historians and become familiar with what they have written about their respective areas of specialization.
Topics include an examination of the place of food in historic events, a history of the Puritans, suffering and sacrifice in the north during the Civil War, industrial capitalism, the definition and role of corporations, and changes in the labor force in recent times. Each reading is framed by an original introduction, which places it in context and prepares students for effective reading, and post-reading questions that encourage students to explore and analyze ideas and information
Developed as an engaging introduction to American history, Problems in U.S. History helps students understand that history is more than a sequence of events – it is the challenges people experience, the values they hold at different points in time, and the changes cultures and countries go through as they evolve. Problems in U.S. History is designed for lower-division survey courses.
