Read stories from the journal entries of Toby Nelson who heard the voice of God say “you do not have a great light.” Feeling ill-suited and disappointed, the Voice spoke again, “I am sending you to dark places where your special light will shine brighter.” He took his light and entered the darkest places all over the world. “My purpose and prayer is to ‘comfort the suffering, heal the broken, give hope to the broken-hearted, to shine light into the dark places of despair and to bring the ministry of heaven to hell.’” “I have seen what humans were not wired to look at. I have witnessed what should not have happened; I was present as the unthinkable materialized. I have watched the unimaginable take shape, the forbidden become permissible and the offensive become a norm. I have seen nightmares come to life. I cannot “un-see” these images that are branded into my memory. All of the past experiences shape my present.” “One counselor pressed me to have more balance in my life. I know I should spread out my energy evenly between family, rest, nutrition, spiritual renewal, recreation and work. I have two sober opinions: my counselor was right; and there will never be balance in my life. Nor do it want it. When I am with a disaster team the work is consuming, off the chart extreme. Nothing I do can be done half-heartedly or in moderation. Half my brain stays hyper-vigilant, another half is vulnerable - like I am dancing on a precipice, and the third half struggles to keep sane.” “The work and calling of a Disaster Pastor is a Terrible-Honor. This book will take you where you likely have never been before. Many of the stories are dark, some are funny and all are meant to be inspirational and instructional. In the following stories you can vicariously test yourself by asking the question that lies beneath just below the surface: “What would I have done?”
