The speckle phenomenon is ubiquitous in many fields of science and technology, says Goodman, and while he focuses here on simulating optical speckle, he says the same methods can apply to other imaging modalities. He uses the Mathemaica software because it allows interspersing both continuous and discrete calculation under one umbrella; because it allows text, code, and illustration in the same document; and because users can create dynamic figures and change their parameters at will. His topics include first-order statistics of speckle amplitude, simulating speckle in optical imaging, speckle at low light level, polarization speckle, and speckle simulation for metrology.
