Julius Jortner was born in 1936 in Romania near the border with Poland. His parents were Polish nationals with a business in Romania. They contrived to leave in late 1940, heading south out of Europe to escape the war and the Holocaust, eventually finding refuge in Bombay, India. In 1946, after the World War II ended, they came to the USA, where Jortner has lived since, first in New York City, then in Los Angeles, and now, for the last 20 years or so, in Pacific City, Oregon. Jortner's formal schooling includes a diploma from Stuyvesant High School in New York City, a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, also in NYC; and a Master of Engineering from the University of California in Los Angeles. He has experienced marriages, fatherhood, divorce, love, friendship, widowerhood, and work (as a research engineer and as a freelance photojournalist) among other aspects of a mostly peaceful life. He often reads at open-mic events along the northern Oregon coast. Some of his poems have appeared in publications of the Northwest Poets’ Concord, and in North Coast Squid (in which some of his photos also appear).
