A Support Group’s True Stories Of Bladder Pain Syndrome/Interstitial Cystitis A urologist, a nurse, and twenty Citrus Valley IC Support Group partners share more than a decade of combined experience dealing with Bladder Pain Syndrome/Interstitial Cystitis (BPS/IC). This book is the output of learning exchanges with the members of the Citrus Valley Interstitial Cystitis Support Group that began meeting in 2000. The medical label of “Interstitial Cystitis” has been expanded to include the explanatory label “Bladder Pain Syndrome” (BPS/IC), meaning it includes pelvic pain of bladder origin; this description strengthens the understanding and the reality of the impact of BPS/IC has on the human body. This BPS/IC recovery guide shares the thoughts and course of actions that are time tested by our support group’s experience through trials, errors, and successes. Over these years through our meetings, phone calls, and email contacts we have shared information, solved dilemmas, been perplexed, gained insights, stumbled on to answers or found comfort in person to person support and advocacy for BPS/IC. Our purpose in writing this recovery guide is to make it your resource that recognizes your ability to work with the challenge of BPS/IC and learn the techniques to bring balance back into our life. This guide is our best effort to address what we have recognized as the reoccurring themes in our individual IC discovery and recovery trail. We need your help to ask and answer more questions about BPS/IC. We, of the Citrus Valley IC Support Group, would appreciate a continued conversation with you and invite you to please contact us at www.icaction.com with your thoughts, insights, and your voice in the partnership for support.

Edward Davis, M.D. Edward Davis, M.D. graduated from the University of Missouri and completed his internship and urology residency at Los Angeles County/University of Southern California Medical Center. He has practiced his urology specialty in Glendora, California since graduation, and received his board certification by the American Board of Urology more than 35 years ago. Dr. Davis with his wife, Josephine, formed the Citrus Valley Interstitial Cystitis Support Group in 2000. The focus of the group is education and problem solving as it relates to Painful Bladder Syndrome (PBS) historically known as IC. Dr. Davis interest in Painful Bladder Syndrome was the foundation for the start of Citrus Valley Medical Research. The majority of the studies have as a goal the control of BPS/IC symptoms that often focuses on the pelvic pain that is not easily controlled. Dr. Davis’s experience in urology and as a Colonel in the United States Air Force and California Air Guard, retired, helped him understand the need for plan to put action toward a set goal; this means with planning there is the best chance for the realization of the success. Josephine Davis, R.N., B.S.N., C.R.C. Josephine Davis, BS RN graduated from Shadyside Hospital School of Nursing, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Pasadena City College, Pasadena, California and she earned her B.S.N, from University of St Francis, Los Angeles program. Her Southern California nursing career began at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles Medical Center. Mrs. Davis works at Citrus Valley Urologic Medical Group in the BPS/IC Clinic with two patient advocates. Jo has more than 14 years of interaction with men and women with BPS/IC. She has learned as much as she has taught from each patient and member of the support group about the impact BPS/IC has on life. Jo and Ed Davis have been married for forty-five years. They have two sons, two daughters-in-law, and two grandchildren. The title of the book, “I’m Peeing as Fast as I Can,” is based on the interchange between two women separated by a public restroom stall door. Jo is on the work side of the door struggling to complete voiding and finding that her bladder is again not cooperating in her efforts. The symptoms of urinary urgency, frequency, and pelvic pain produce reaction mix of frustration, helplessness, and anger and are the emotional description of BPS/IC.
