Life couldn't get any more complicated for Charles (Charlie) Schultz, a young WWI veteran who is hiding out at his sister's house to escape a loveless marriage to a woman he barely knows. However, life takes an unexpected turn for Charlie in the Christian fiction novel The Telegram, when he receives a telegram declaring his wife's sudden death. Charlie feels guilty about his lack of charity concerning his wife's passing and journeys back to his hometown of Guyandotte, West Virginia to seek counsel from his best friend, Otis, a minister. The return home begins a series of flashbacks for Charlie of memories of growing up in a Christian home, train hopping with Otis and engaging in misadventures with his Army buddies in the early 1900s. Through it all, Charlie stays close to God and his Christian faith, through prayer, as he realizes his calling in God's plan for his life
