Cyber security is on everyone’s mind; the headlines have been screaming the news about Target and other retail breaches in the last few weeks of 2013. Organizations of all sizes are feeling the pressure to do more, but what to do? This book examines the risks in the current and future realm of cyber-attacks, the leadership elements necessary to mobilize the entire organization and high payoff activities like information sharing that can help you be more prepared and proactive. The content is aimed specifically at board of directors, C-Suite executives, and non-technical managers. Chief Information Officers and Chief Information Security Officers will benefit from increased awareness of the organization, and IT staffers will understand a wider scope of the issues around preparing and defending an organization’s prized information. Explanations should be understandable without a deep technical background. We will examine the "people" issues of a strong cyber defense; assembling the right talent pool, and organizing them to be more effective in activities that will protect the organization from a wide range of potential harm inflictors – nation states, cyber criminals, and teenagers with talent and time on their hands. I will answer some pressing questions that have come up at a number of presentations with senior leadership from many different organizations: • How big is this risk? Can I handle it with my other organizational liabilities? • How did we get into this situation? • What can the board do to oversee our cyber efforts? • What should senior management do on a daily basis to help prevent attacks/breaches? • How should my internal team be configured and allocated? • Who should I turn to for outside help? • What can I do proactively to prevent attacks and respond better when an attack occurs? • Why and how do I share information with trusted partners and the government? • What is the government doing to help organizations be more secure? • Are there accepted best practices that I should be following? • How do I stay up to date in relation to the flood of information about cyber security? • When are things going to get better? • What are the future trends I need to worry about?
