A Hilarious Comedy of Manners Filled with Wit, Romance, and Endearing Absurdity
First performed in 1775, The Rivals marks the dazzling debut of Richard Brinsley Sheridan, the sharp-witted Irish playwright who would go on to become a celebrated political figure and literary icon of Georgian England.
In this uproarious comedy of manners, Sheridan satirizes the pretensions and romantic obsessions of 18th-century society through a cast of unforgettable characters:
✅ The word-mangling Mrs. Malaprop, who "deranges her epitaphs" with glorious confidence
✅ Her romance-obsessed niece Lydia Languish, who dreams of scandalous elopements
✅ The blustering Sir Anthony Absolute, the scheming Captain Jack, and the fiery Sir Lucius O’Trigger
With razor-sharp dialogue, mistaken identities, and delightfully tangled romantic plots, The Rivals is both a masterclass in comedic structure and a surprisingly warm exploration of human foolishness.
If you love witty banter, laugh-out-loud misunderstandings, and comedies that reveal the tender heart beneath the satire, The Rivals belongs on your shelf.
