Water purification has remained a priority direction for decades, and the modelling of its processes is central to any new approach. For the first time in the world literature, this monograph presents in full the multistage and generalized model of flotation that the author proposed more than thirty years ago, and shows what can be built upon it. The book follows the model through the whole range of its applications: the kinetics of ionic flotation and of wastewater purification by flotation defecating; the theoretical bases of electro-flotation on hydrogen, on oxygen and on both; models of complex purification processes; the intensification of pressure-head flotation with carbon dioxide; flotation decanters and columns, jet and ejection aerators; the dehydration of sediments; and the extraction of target products, from the thickening and inactivation of microorganism biomass to the recovery of metals from technogenic waters. A substantial part of the work is devoted to equipment. On the basis of the multistage and generalized models the author developed flotation harvesters of the KBS type and for special purposes, together with new aeration systems, and describes their introduction at industrial enterprises: in soap-boiling production and the treatment of fatty effluents, in agro-industrial processing, in the utilization of coal ash from thermoelectric power stations, and in the thickening of excess activated sludge, including the use of flocculants and of microorganisms as flocculants. The prospects of thermo-flotation and of water-use recursive systems close the study, together with the further ways in which flotation purification can be intensified. Intended for a wide range of readers: researchers, university teachers, PhD students, master's and bachelor's students working in water and soil purification, industrial safety and mineral processing.

Boris S. Ksenofontov is Doctor of Technical Sciences and Professor in the field of ecology and industrial safety. He is the author of 450 publications, including 15 training manuals and 16 monographs issued in Russia and abroad, and holds 200 patents. He developed the principles of flotation theory as a multistage process, which made it possible to create flotation machines and apparatus for drain purification, including flotation harvesters introduced at a number of enterprises. He was the first to propose a method of flotation thickening of activated sludge using two working liquids saturated with gases.
