Sedbergh letters - Softcover

A rare and original account of life at Sedbergh School in the late 1950s as seen through the letters home of two brothers, Jamie Bruce Lockhart and Sandy, the late Baron Bruce Lockhart, Kt, OBE, who were boarders at School House. Although very close and only one year apart in age, the boys' different interests, outlook and style of letter-writing gives this view of school life a rare dual perspective. The letters, edited with an introduction and copious annotations by Jamie, provide a fascinating picture of life at Sedbergh School at a period of transition half-way between the ethos of the period following the Second World War and the new liberal mood of the late 1960s.

Jamie Bruce Lockhart, born in 1941, was educated at the Dragon School, Oxford, Sedbergh School, Sedbergh, and St John's College, Cambridge. Following spells in banking in Paris and London, he worked in the Central Planning Office of the government of Fiji on preparation of the country's first economic five-year plan. In 1973 he joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, serving in London and in diplomatic missions abroad in Nicosia, Vienna, Lagos and Bonn. After retirement from the FCO, he ran a charitable trust in London, where he launched a forum for political dialogue between leading private individuals from Greece and Turkey. Previous publications include the edited travel diaries and a biography of Scottish explorer in Africa, Hugh Clapperton, Commander RN; and he has recently been working with Cambridge social anthropologist Professor Alan Macfarlane on letters from their shared schooldays experience at the Dragon and Sedbergh. He lives in Suffolk where he enjoys sketching, painting and sailing.
