Rita Janes is a Professional Development Math Consultant for teachers at all grade levels. She is the first Canadian elected in an at-large position to the NCTM Board of Directors. She has also served the Canadian Director of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics.
Rita is a well known speaker at conferences throughout Canada and the United States. She worked as a classroom teacher for many years in the St. John¿s area, as well as an instructor in the Mathematics Department and the Faculty of Education at Memorial University. She has held several executive positions on the Mathematics Special Interest Council of the NLTA, and was the first recipient of the NLTA Barnes Award for outstanding service in the area of professional development.
As a teacher consultant, Rita developed and implemented the first program in gifted education in Newfoundland and Labrador and continues to work so that all students will have successful experiences in learning mathematics. She is particularly interested in developing programs that relate mathematics to real life situations, along with promoting the problem solving and higher level reasoning abilities of students while at the same time ensuring that students have the necessary basic skills in mathematics. She is well known for her work in developing and implementing a program for parents of elementary children to assist them in helping their children learn mathematics.
Elizabeth Strong has served as a Classroom & Special Needs Teacher, School Administrator and a University Professor at Memorial University, St. John¿s, NL. She has also served on the International Board on Books For Young People as a Regional Councillor, and a Provincial Director for the Canadian Association for Young Children. She received the Prime Minister¿s Awards for Teaching Excellence in Science, Technology, and Mathematics. She has a Masters in Education in Reading and Language Arts from Memorial University and a PhD in Children¿s and Adolescent Literature, Early Literacy, Early Childhood from The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH.
