Dragged off a train in central China by Communist soldiers, former U.S. naval intelligence officer John Potter, accused of espionage, fights for his freedom—and possibly his life—during a brutal interrogation by counter-intelligence agents. Physically and mentally exhausted, he stands for 15 hours under a barrage of accusations and demands in Chinese, prodded to his feet with rifle butts whenever he collapses. Such life-threatening situations are no strangers to Potter during his First Nine Lives. After graduating from Harvard in 1947, he charges through adventures in a dozen countries, culminating in Korea, where he organizes a brilliantly successful shipping and trading business employing 300 people–and nearly crashes a plane carrying 40 passengers. Throughout these pages the reader is plunged into unexpected situations that Potter encounters–some frightening, some outrageously funny, all gripping.
