"Captiva Daze" is a light-hearted look at a family man's two week vacation on a South-West Florida Island near Ft. Myers. Torn between spending time with his family and partying on the island, Michael also must face his current crisis that he is unemployed, and that his writing creativity has all but disappeared. The tropical locale and other characters, including Michael's uptight younger brother and other real-life people on the island, provide a colorful backdrop to the humorous, philosophical, religious, and political dialogues always present in the Jimmy Buffett Parrothead cliques when plenty of alcohol is available. After reading "Captiva Daze", the reader may feel a need to pack up the Subaru and head to Florida, or at least mix a nice tropical boat-drink and listen to some good island song.

Michael Newman calls himself the 'Original SandyBeachBum'... the well-tanned scruffy man who sets himself down on the dunes early in the day with a fishing pole and six-pack of Coronas with limes and not a single care in the world. Despite this imaginary belief about himself that cannot be true due to his steadfast responsibility to care for his wife, Julia, and two young children, Emmannuela (9) and Mikito (7), Michael and his family still find themselves able to visit Captiva Island, Florida once per year, enjoying the sun, sand, surf, and tropical living that so many poor schlepps yearn for, but few ever experience outside of the whimsical Jimmy Buffet song. Some day, Michael hopes, he can live six spring/summer months in Paris, and the remainder of the year on Captiva Island, enjoying the local culture, good food and strong drink, while writing more humorous books about living the dream.
