JOHN RUTHVEN is passionate about engaging everyone through film and all forms of electronic media, to tell great stories about our planet's aquatic life. He started his career as a professionally trained BBC sound engineer, and over the years has written, produced and directed fascinating, award-winning shows for BBC, Discovery, National Geographic, PBS and many other well-known broadcasters. His work on Blue Planet II, for which he produced the episode on the open oceans - 'Big Blue' - moved audiences when it depicted the death of a newborn pilot whale and the heartbreaking sounds of the calf's mother due to our own polluting of the sea with microplastics. Following this segment of the show, the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State for the Environment referenced the episode in parliament and commended the programme for bringing this environmental issue to the fore. The Whale in the Living Room is his first book.
The thrilling adventures of award-winning wildlife documentary producer, John Ruthven, on a journey of discovery that has helped to uncover many of our ocean's mysteries.
Ruthven has mesmerised audiences across his work producing for Blue Planet and Blue Planet II, making nearly fifty ocean films and working on episodes of Discovery Shark Week, expedition films for National Geographic, and coral conservation documentaries for PBS. Through innovative technology, he has helped capture unique images of a sperm whale mother and calf, pictures of glowing creatures half a mile deep, and grey reef sharks hunting by the light of the moon.
In The Whale in the Living Room Ruthven invites you to swim with him through blue lagoons, dive into the abyss to encounter new life forms, and experience everything from the danger of getting lost at sea to the sadness of finding a starving whale with a fishing net caught in its mouth. Through each remarkable adventure, Ruthven gives insight into what we currently know about the ocean, and our whole blue planet.
