Unlike most middle school math contests, which require solving a large number of problems in a short time, Klee, Malkin, and Pevtsova explain, an oral math olympiad gives students three hours to solve a small number of problems, and then present the solutions orally to a judge. The problems rarely involve taxing computations or memorized formulas, they say, but focus on logic, solving problems, and proofs. They recount their experience of running an oral math olympiad for 10 years in Seattle, but devote most of the book to problem sets and detailed solutions and practical suggestions for anyone who would like to organize an oral olympiad in their community.
