Bieri and Strebel explore piecewise linear (PL) homeomorphisms of the real line, in a mixture of general results and explicit computations with specific groups. They cover the construction of finitary PL-homeomorphisms, generating sets, the subgroup of bounded homeomorphisms B, presentations, and isomorphisms and automorphism groups. The core of their treatment is a corrected and augmented version of the Bieri-Strebel memoir, which they typed and distributed to a few mathematicians in 1985. Strebel revised, enlarged, and updated it and published it in an electronic repository in 2014. This is a revised version of the electronic document.
