This story is based on interviews with six women who, as children, were incarcerated in the in the Catholic orphanage at Goodwood in Adelaide, South Australia. These women were part of the contingent of children who were sent out from England to Australia just after World War Two. In the novel, Rag Doll covers a time span of fifty years with settings in England and Australia and incorporates several complex subjects and most importantly the effect of orphan life in various institutions; also trauma associated with loss of family and the desolation of major life changes brought on by the clinical condition of manic depression. It is the story of two women, Sylvie and Gwen, whose lives are inextricably linked through a shared history, although it is Sylvie Simmons, born in the midlands of England during World War Two to a working class family who is the main protagonist. It is also a story of discovery and the astounding revelations that both women still have close living relatives.
