Chapter One

I'm Not Giving My Black Back

    I was born in Mississippi,
Went back and forth to New Or-leans,
I came from a heritage that had to fight,
If you know what I mean,
And I'm proud to be born to an African-American Queen.
We came to the United States on the back on a ship,
Lord knows I cried when I heard we'd been dipped,
And you expect me to forget how we were brought,
Don't walk around here like you ain't never been taught,
All those years we had fought,
And y'all looking at me like the color of my skin is my fault,
No, excuse my English and listen to what I have to say.
My ancestors worked hard picking cotton and laying down hay,
And then you have the nerve to down them in my face,
But that's OK 'cause I'm through talking to you anyway,
Now you're sitting there like you ain't got nothing else to say,
So learn about your Black history,
    Take pride in yourself,
    We're in this world together,
Can't worry about no one else,
    So for one and all,
And I'll stand straight and tall and say,
I'M NOT GIVING MY BLACK BACK!

        A Sista Violated

    Stop!
    You're hurting me!
    Let GO!
This man wouldn't listen to me,
    As I told him, "NO!"

    He came into my room,
    As I slept at night,
I thought it was my mother,
    Coming to say good-night,
To much of my surprise, I was wrong, not right.

    He crept into the room,
    Pulled back the sheets,
    With my legs shaking,
As my heart skipped a beat.

I screamed at the top of my lungs,
So my mother could save me,
    But she wasn't at home,
She was out having a baby.

I was all alone with him,
I panicked as thoughts went through my head,
He came closer, and it was my legs he spread,
Then what happened next, should not be said.

That night, I went to my grandmother,
    To tell her my story,
    She believed what I said,
As she wiped the tears from my eyes,
With a look on her face as if she wasn't surprised.

    She told my mother,
    Who thought she was crazy,
She started swearing up and down
And saying, "NO, NOT MY BABY!"

This occurred for two nights in a row,
'Til my grandma said "I wasn't living there no mo'."
She called the police to have him arrested,
He climbed in the backseat giving me a death stare,
But he was going to jail forever,
    So I really didn't care.

    That was back in '69,
When I was only 10 years old,
My mom still doesn't believe me,
And it still hurts to this day,
    In fact, she blames me,
She blames me for that night,
When the cops took him out of sight.
