Excerpt: ... 9. Anaemia, Oligemia. Deficicncy or rather Paleness of the Blood. It is only true anaemia, or deficiency of blood consequent upon excessive losses of this fluid, that consists in a diminution of the quantity of the blood without any simultaneous alteration in the normal composition of this fluid. Spurious anaemia with which we shall principally deal in this chapter, constitutes a disease of the blood where the number of the red corpuscles is more or less diminished, in consequence of which the blood becomes paler and appears variously altered both quantitatively and qualitatively. Hence it is with a qualitative rather than with a quantitative disease of the blood that we have to deal with, where the deficiency of red blood-disks constitutes a characteristic phenomenon, on which account it would be more appropriate, according to Vogcl, to denominate the disease oligocythemia. In a normal condition of the organism, the reproduction of red corpuscles equilibrates their decay, so that, within certain limits, the percentage amount of blood-disks in the blood, and their total quantity remains unchanged. In diseases, however, this relative proportion is disturbed, so that more blood-disks decay than are reproduced; hence arises the condition which Vogel denominates oiigocythemia. The results of our pathological and anatomical investigations show that the blood of anaemic individuals is deficient in red corpuscles; it contains less haematin and fibrin, but on the other hand an excess of serum. The anaemic blood is fluid, pale, the clot is small, soft, floats in a quantity of serum, its specific gravity is diminished; the crassamentum which is sometimes entirely wanting, is less dense and easily disintegrated. Anaemia is either a primary or secondary morbid proce...
