REPORT of the Committee appointed by the Order of the Board, dated 30th June, 1832, to inquire into the circumstances connected with Mr. Bayley's Publication of the Calendars Of The Proceedings In Chancery, and his Charges for the same. His Honour the Master of the Rolls having signified to the Committee that it would be impossible for him to take any part in this Investigation, the other Members of the Committee commenced the Inquiry on the 17th July last, and continued it at various adjourned Meetings until a Meeting which took place at the Tower of London, on the 21st August last, when, in consequence of a Letter addressed to the Chairman, by Mr. Bayley Appendix B. PartII., it was deemed unnecessary to continue the Inquiry any further. The Witnesses whom your Committee examined, and whose Evidence will be found in the Appendix, Part I, were severally told, that, though no oath was at the moment tendered to them, they were to consider in delivering such evidence, that they might hereafter be required to confirm it on oath, if the Board should so determine. Mr. Bayley was himself always present; and had and exercised the power of putting any questions to the witnesses. Other evidence was collected by the Secretary; and other witnesses would have been produced to your Committee, if the Letter of Mr. Bayley, already noticed Appendix B., had not seemed to supersede the necessity of continuing such Inquiry:--but as the persons examined by the Secretary received a similar warning viz. that they might be required hereafter to confirm upon oath the deposition which he took down, your Committee think it not unfitting to subjoin such testimony Appendix from C. to DD.
