On Nathan Bedford Forrest's Escort and Staff

"Bradley is at his best when discussing these men [Forrest's staff]. His inclusion of material from the minutes of postwar reunions contributes to our understanding of the ways in which such events served to commemorate the soldiers' service and to renew and extend their ties with each other."
-Journal of Southern History

"The book provides valuable new information on the lives of several of the men, unit rosters, and new details from the minutes of their reunions from 1877 to 1909."
--Civil War Book Review

"Tells the cavalryman's story through the eyes of his aides, presenting a vigorous defense of Forrest."
--Glenn W. LaFantasie, professor of Civil War history, Western Kentucky University, Daily News, Bowling Green, Kentucky

Michael R. Bradley was first inspired to write about General Forrest's staff when he stumbled upon a copy of the unpublished minutes of the meetings of the Escort Veterans Association. Once he began his research, he received input and assistance from local historians and members of Sons of Confederate Veterans and United Daughters of the Confederacy camps. This new volume expands upon his theme, examining the many men who rode with Forrest. Essential readings for any true Civil War aficionado are the detailed rosters of each unit. Included are state, cavalry, and regular army units as well as a complete annotated bibliography and a timeline of Forrest's military career.

Bradley is a well-known military historian who has written extensively on the Civil War. He is a recipient of the Jefferson Davis Medal in Southern History.

Aus dem Klappentext

"Michael R. Bradley breaks new ground with his study of Bedford Forrest's staff and escort, a remarkable group of Confederate cavalrymen. No Civil War soldiers, South or North, could match this hundred-man force as shock troops. . . . Bradley, following in the dramatic footsteps of Andrew Lytle with the thoroughness and reliability of Robert Selph Henry, does them proud focusing on them and their roles. Until now these men had gone almost nameless with all the attention given their legendary commander. Bradley has mended this oversight, helping explain Forrest's almost invariable success by putting faces on his staff and escort."
-Nathaniel Cheairs Hughes, Jr., author of Brigadier General Tyree H. Bell: Forrest's Fighting Lieutenant
