Chapter One

GLORY YEARS FOR THE REPUBLIC

I consider the high-water mark of the American Republic to be the years 1940 through 1960, a plateau to be the years 1960 through 1963, and a decline from 1964 to present. For most of the declining years, it has been an arithmetic decline, but starting in the early 1990s, the decline became nearly logarithmic. At the Republic's high-water mark, it was solvent, a benefactor of the world, secure and confident of its future. These were glory years for the country and most of its citizens. Days of wine and roses.

Although all radicals and many liberals despise scientists and their efforts, it is the only sector of our society that has progressed for the better in the past five to five and a half decades. Sure there have been missteps, mostly, in my opinion, due to human error. Concrete progress in all scientific and technology areas, from medicine, to automobiles, to communication, to information processing, to housing, to food, to the environment, can be seen all around.

Not so in our social/civic/personal/government/legal/education institutions. In fact, every one of these endeavors, where the human element is the only or the predominant player, has deteriorated to disaster proportions. Advances in the sciences and in technology are the product of analytical thinking and reason, two items in short supply in a liberal. Take our public school systems. From Chicago to New Orleans to Los Angeles to New York, our public education systems are disaster areas. Certainly they are no match for the schools prior to 1960, when our education system was the envy of the world.

Even with tossing out the old IQ test as "not relevant" and the successive watering down of replacement examinations, the educators still can't get the students to perform. Some colleges do not require a SAT, and there is even talk of doing away with the SAT altogether. This thinking has exacerbated the weak links of what was once a great educational system, plunging it into failure. Do I feel bad for the adults that have facilitated this failure? Not on your life.. It's the children and the country that I feel sorry for.

Even with teaching the test and lax test environments, lowered passing grade, et cetera, et cetera, test scores continue to fall. The students would be far, far better off if they took twice as long, and schools just kept them in first grade until they learned the material. Self-esteem is acquired by learning, not by being passed on unprepared.

Finally, I believe nothing put out by the educators. Over the years they have proven themselves untrustworthy. In a recent period of about ten days, my locally distributed newspapers reported that grades had improved, slightly. A few days later, the papers reported that national test scores were down—again.

To highlight another failure, one only has to consider what has happened to the judicial system. Any resulting justice in a courtroom today is purely accidental. Today the "judicial branch of the government" is actually only a hollow system. There was a day when I would have trusted my life to a jury of twelve peers. Today, I would trust nothing to a jury. Think about it for a minute. In the courtroom a witness swears to "tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth." Not so for judges or lawyers. A lawyer can lie in court. Think of the significance of that. And, of course, they do lie, they mislead, and they manipulate. It is hardly necessary to note that with a few exceptions, all judges are lawyers.

Recently there was an obituary in the newspaper that printed a picture of an aged lady, as well as a picture of her when she was perhaps twenty-five or thirty years old. She was born in 1921, and age had taken a heavy toll on her outward appearance. In the younger photo, she was a beautiful woman in full bloom. An analogy is there with this country. At the time of that younger photo (1940–1951), this country was in full flower: respected by the world, wealthy, almost unlimited industrial capacity, the best vehicles (and best looking) in the world, a united population, stable energy prices. The price of a gallon of gasoline could go for years with only a few cents worth of change, and this was sometimes due to a local "gas war." Millions from the world over wanted to...
