Chapter One

Ashley and Tiana were excited while riding in the car. Their mother promised them an ice cream cone when they finished all their chores so that is where they were going. On the way to the ice cream store, Ashley and Tiana saw a bright orange sign that read "Garage Sale".

The girls hoped that their mother would not see the sign because their mother loves to go to garage sales. If their mother saw the sign, Ashley and Tiana knew they would have to wait a little while longer before they could have ice cream! But their mom did see the sign, so they turned down the road and followed the arrows to the garage sale.

The girls sighed as they got out of the car to look around. It was all pretty boring stuff. There was nothing there for kids to look at! Why would anyone want to buy old drinking glasses, pots and pans or garage tools?

Then, on the end of one table, among all the boring stuff, Ashley saw a red box. She walked over to the box and picked it up to see what was inside. When she opened the box she saw a bunch of rectangle shaped red plastic tiles with white dots on them. She called Tiana over and asked, "What are these?" Tiana looked at them and said, "I don't know but I like the color!" "I wonder what you do with them?" Ashley asked.

Just then, the lady selling all the boring stuff came over to the girls and asked, "Would you like to buy the dominos? They are for sale, only 50 cents." Tiana asked, "What do you do with these?" and the lady told her, "You play a fun game that helps you practice math." "Math!" Tiana said. "Math is not fun!"

"Oh but it is when you use it to play a game." The lady said. "How do you play?" Ashley asked. "Well", the lady said, "you each get 5 dominos and you try to put dominos together so the dots add up to 5 dots, or 10 dots, or 15 dots or more. Every time you do, you get points. The one with the most points wins the game."

"But I don't like adding," Ashley said. "I have to use my fingers to add and when I run out of fingers to count, I have to use my toes!" "Me too!" said Tiana. But the garage sale lady told the girls with a lot of practice while playing this game, they would not need to count using their fingers and toes anymore.

So Ashley and Tiana bought the red box of red dominos. They each paid 25 cents and went back to the car to wait for their mother. Their mother finally came back to the car with all her garage sale treasures that she bought, and they were finally off to the ice cream store.

When Ashley and Tiana got home, they opened the red box and took out the red dominos. At first they had to count each white dot on every red domino to see how many points they had. But after playing with the dominos more and more, they were able to add the dots better, just like the garage sale lady said!
