This book is an intriguing journey into the heart of human nature, set against the backdrop of 17th-century Bavaria. The author skillfully weaves together themes of faith, morality, and social justice, inviting readers to contemplate the complexities of the human experience. Through the eyes of a young Franciscan monk named Ambrosius, we are transported to a remote monastery nestled amidst the imposing Alps. As Ambrosius grapples with his own spiritual growth, he encounters a world filled with both piety and prejudice. The stark contrast between the serene monastery life and the harsh realities of the outside world, particularly the plight of the ostracized hangman's daughter, Benedicta, challenges Ambrosius's understanding of compassion and forgiveness. The author's insightful observations on societal norms and the often-misguided judgments we make about others encourage introspection and a deeper appreciation for the inherent dignity of every individual. This book is a timeless exploration of the human condition, leaving readers with a profound understanding of the power of empathy and the importance of challenging societal prejudices.

I have always felt that this was inadequate acknowledgment of the work Of Herr Voss, for Whom I have the profoundest admiration.

Many years ago probably in 1890 Dr. Gustav A dolf Danziger brought to me in San Francisco what he said was a translation by himself of a German story by that brilliant writer, Herr Richard Voss, of Heidelberg. As Dr. Danziger had at that time a most im perfect acquaintance with the English lan guage, he asked me to rewrite his version of Herr Voss swork for publication in this coun try. In reading it I was struck by what seemed to me certain possibilities of amplification, and I agreed to do the work if given a free hand by both author and translator. To this some what ill-considered proposal, which I sup posed would make an end of the matter, I was afterward assured that the author, personally known to the translator, had assented. The result was this book, published by F. J. Schulte Company of Chicago.
