This wonderful tradition has been passed on from generation to generation in Ira’s family, and has become her passion through design. She loves working with yarn and other fibers to express her ideas. She sells her designs through Etsy and Ravelry, and her own website. This is her first book.

CHAPTER 1

JEFFERY THE ELEPHANT

Rug, Pillow and Stool Cover


Jeffery is my most favorite animal creation! His amazing curved trunk reminds me of hooks and inspires me to crochet.

It is not surprising that I chose to make this elephant collection to decorate my craft studio – the combination of texture, lace and chunkiness brings my workspace to life!


After making Jeffery in gray yarn, I just had to make a colorful friend for him! So I crocheted Josefina in a pretty pink yarn with a purple bow. Choose your favorite (or make both) and, once you've completed the rug, crochet a coordinating elephant pillow and a sweet stool cover to decorate your room.

Rnd 4: Ch 2, 2 dc in same st as join, dc in next 2 sts, [2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts] 11 times; join = 48 sts

Rnd 5: Ch 2, dc in same st as join, dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, [dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st] 11 times; join = 60 sts

Row 12: (RS) Ch 2 (counts as first dc now and throughout), skip st with join, dc in next 16 sts, place

Marker A in next st; turn = 17 sts

Row 13: (WS) Ch 2, skip first st, dc2tog, dc in next 12 sts, dc2tog; turn = 15 sts

Row 14: (RS) Ch 2, skip first st, dc2tog, dc in next 10 sts, dc2tog; turn = 13 sts

Row 15: (WS) Ch 2, skip first st, dc2tog, dc in next 8 sts, dc2tog; turn = 11 sts

Row 16: (RS) Ch 2, skip first st, dc2tog, dc in next 6 sts, dc2tog; turn = 9 sts

Row 17: (WS) Ch 2, skip first st, dc2tog, dc in next 4 sts, dc2tog; turn = 7 sts

Rows 20-41: Repeat Rows 18 and 19 in established pattern, ending on WS

Turn and work Step 3 on RS.


STEP 3 - EDGING

With RS facing, ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc in first st, sc in next 5 sts, 3 sc in next st, sc evenly across the concave edge of the trunk, sc in st with Marker A and remove the marker, sc in next 55 sts, [ch 18, sc in next st] 4 times, sc in next 55 sts, sc evenly across the convex edge of the trunk; join (1)

Fasten off, leaving a long single strand of MC for sewing. Weave in the other ends.


LEFT EAR

Make 1. Work with a 9mm (M/N) hook and 3 strands of MC.


STEP 1 - BIG CIRCLE

Work in the round to make 1 big circle.

To beg: Ch 3, sl st in third ch from hook to form a ring (or start with a magic ring)

Rnd 1: Ch 2 (does not count as a st now and throughout), 12 dc in ring; join = 12 sts
