Philosophy of Mind introduces readers to one of the liveliest fields in contemporary philosophy by focusing on mind-body problems and the range of solutions to them. The theories and arguments are presented in greater depth and detail than competing texts, and are presented throughout in a clear and accessible style that is free of technical jargon and presupposes no prior knowledge of philosophy of mind. The author treats each philosophical position in a fair and focused way, introducing readers to the motivations behind it, and the arguments for and against it. The result is a balanced treatment of the entire field that enables students and instructors to immediately grasp current debates.
The book demonstrates how developments in neuroscience, biology, psychology, and cognitive science have impacted the mind/brain-body debate, without the use of complex technical details; bibliographic essays at the end of each chapter bring readers up to date on the latest literature and allow the text to be used in conjunction with primary sources. Diagrams and illustrations are also included to help communicate the more complex arguments. The inclusion of chapters on free will and the philosophy of persons make the book a flexible teaching tool for general philosophy courses in addition to courses in philosophy of mind.
