Excerpt: ... house and would not advocate it. Rep. J. A. Hamill of New Jersey furnished an abundant supply of copies of the bill. Senator N. W. Aldrich of Rhode Island also proffered his assistance. SECOND HEARING BEFORE THE DISTRICT COMMISSIONERS On May 1st, at 10 a. m., Messrs. Yerkes and Gordon, with the President of the University, appeared before the Commissioners. Before the hearing began, Mr. Hayes approached the writer and said that he had heard that the writer had said that he had been trying to coerce the College into buying his property and that this was not so. In reply the writer stated that he had in his possession a letter from a real estate firm (printed above) in which it was said that if the ground was not purchased it would be cut up into streets and suggesting that some wealthy friend of the College might buy it in, and that as a matter of fact such a wealthy friend had been approached. This terminated the conversation, which is the only one ever had by the writer with Mr. Hayes. No other topic was mentioned than the one above stated. The same evening the Washington Star published the following account of the hearing: STREET EXTENSION HEARING. Georgetown Res1dents Interested 1n Volta Place. ARGUMENT FOR AND AGAINST BEFORE THE COMMISSIONERS--COMMENT ON THE BILL. A bill introduced in the House recently by Representative Hayes of California, and referred to the Commissioners for a report, which provides for the extension of Volta Place, northwest, from 35th street to the Conduit road, was the subject of a public hearing before the board of Commissioners this morning.
