Summers at Rustic Lodge is a collection of nostalgic reflections, operating instructions, and meditations on cottage life during the vacations of four generations. Topics range from the disturbing (house guests, septic systems) to the worrisome (trash disposal) to the routine (repairing a wood screen door), to the philosophical (why we pray to our boat engines) to the sublime (dogs on the beach). The book is illustrated with drawings by Dottie Foley, the author's summer neighbor.

Jenny Barthold owns and maintains two adjacent summer cottages that have been in her family for four generations. She and her children and grandchildren spend much of every summer living in them and around them on the Michigan shore of the St. Mary's River. Although she considers her summer cottage her real home, the author is a native of Toledo, Ohio, and currently spends the nine colder months of the year near Lake Michigan in a northern suburb of Chicago.
