English dress, first appeared some fifteen years ago, in the form of a quite small volume. Meet ing with a favorable reception, both from its vigorous treatment of the vital questions which called it forth, and from a native interest belonging to the higher themes upon which it touches an interest to which the human mind is ever alive the author was twice led to enlarge and improve the treatise, until in the third edition it has reached its present size. In the work of translation I have endeavored fairly and faithfully to present the sentiments and views of the author, without omission or accommodation all responsibility for their character of course resting with himself.
