This is one of the Barnes & Noble Rediscovers series. Contains list of illustrations in the text; Foreword; Notes, with Note on Eudoxos; Bibliography; and Index. The author started writing novels while living in Cornwall. Lindsay's earliest novels were set in Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire; they included Cressida's First Lover (1931), Rome For Sale and Caesar Is Dead (both 1934). Lindsay's historical fiction also includes 1649: A Novel of a Year (1938), a social realist novel that begins with the execution of Charles I of England and explores the first year of the Republic through the eyes of ordinary citizens. During World War II, Lindsay served in the British Army initially in the Royal Signal Corps. From 1943 he worked for the War Office. Being a prolific writer, he published 169 books including 38 novels and 25 volumes of translations (from Latin, Greek, Russian, and Polish), as well as art, literary, classical, historical and political studies The author intended this book to carry on his analysis and exposition of ancient science which he began with his books on the Origins of Alchemy and of Astrology. He discovered, however, that he needed a larger focus still--an inquiry into the fundamental ideas or motives of science from the earliest days. The book remains a discussion of concepts of energy and force in the ancient world, but it has gained a much larger perspective and emerges as a general critique of science. His over-all thesis, to his shock, turned out to be that the developments culminating in the atomic bomb, jet-propulsion, and rockets may be said to have been programmed many millennia back by the shamans who added their fantasies of blast-power to the actually existing projectiles.
