Inhaltsangabe

""Logic or the Right Use of Reason in the Inquiry after Truth"" is a classic philosophical text written by Isaac Watts. The book explores the principles of logic and reasoning, and how they can be used to uncover truth and avoid error. Watts begins by introducing the concept of logic and its importance in the pursuit of knowledge. He then delves into the different types of reasoning, including deductive and inductive reasoning, and discusses their strengths and weaknesses. The book also covers topics such as fallacies, syllogisms, and the use of language in argumentation. Throughout the text, Watts emphasizes the importance of clear thinking and the need for logical rigor in all areas of inquiry. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in philosophy, logic, or critical thinking.1825. With a variety of rules to guard against error in the affairs of religion and human life, as well as in the sciences. Watts, English theologian and hymn writer, became tutor in the family of Sir John Hartopp at Stoke Newington, where it is assumed he prepared the materials of his two scholarly works Logic, or the Right Use of Reason in the Enquiry after Truth, and The Knowledge of the Heavens and the Earth Made Easy, or the First Principles of Geography and Astronomy Explained. Baronet. SIR, IT is fit the public should receive through your hands what was written originally for the assistance of youir younger studies, and was then presented to you. It was by the repeatedimportunitiesofour learned friend Mr. John Eamesy that I was persuaded to revise these rtidiments of logic and when I had once suffered ray self to begin the work, I was drawn still onward far beyond my first design, even to the neglect, or too long delay of other pressing and important demands that were upon mt It hajs been my endeavour to form every part of this treatise both for the instruction of students, to open their way into the sciences, and for the more extensive and general service of mankind, that the gentleman and the Chris tian might find their account in the perusal as well as the scholar. I have therefore collected and proposed the chief principles and rul of ridit judisfment in matters of common and sacred importance, and pointed out our most frequent mistakes and prejudices in the concerns of life and religion, that we might better guard against the springs of error, guilt and sorrow, which surround us in our state of mortality. You know, Sir, the great design of this noble science is to rescue our reasoning powers from their unhappy slavery and darkness 5and thus, with all due submission and deference, it offers an humble assistance to divine revelations. I ts chief business is to relieve the natural weaknesses of the mind by some better efforts of nature; it is to diffuse alight over the understanding in our inquiries after truth, and not to furnish the tongue with debate and controversy.
