In ihren Memoiren beschreibt Anna Shuttleworth ihr musikalisches und persönliches Leben, mit vielen Einsichten in Cellotechnik und Performance. Sie entdeckt auch die letzte Reisegeschichte ihrer Eltern wieder. Anna wurde 1927 gegründet und wuchs in den musikalischen und politischen Zeiten auf. Ihr Vater, der für den indischen Bürgerdienst arbeitete, war Experte für klassische und orientalische Sprachen. Ihre Mutter aus irisch-polnischem Hintergrund sorgt für emotionale Wärme und temperamentvolles Temper. Annas Celloreise begann früh und nahm sie mit Ivor James am Royal College of Music in London zu studieren und später an berühmte Cellisten wie Mainardi und Casals. Ihre lange Cellokarriere gibt eine warme, fleißige und unabhängige Frau, die oft die Hose trug. Als Performerin und als angesehene Lehrerin ist sie dafür bekannt, einen musikalischen sechsten Sinn zu haben, und sie war freundlich mit vielen bekannten Musikern ihrer Zeit, darunter Gerald Finzi, Ralph Vaughan Williams (die sie "Die schwülste Cellist" genannt), Colin Davis, Mstislav Rostropovich und Jacqueline du Pré.
