Joan Monahan Watson, Ph.D., is a distinguished educator with over two decades of experience in teaching and educational leadership. She holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Educational Psychology, as well as a Graduate Certificate in Cognition and Education from Virginia Tech. Her academic journey also includes a Master’s and a Bachelor’s degree in English, underscored by a Post-Graduate Professional Teaching License in Virginia.
Dr. Watson has taught secondary students in the public and private sectors (grades 6-12) and university undergraduate and graduate students at R1 institutions. Her approach to education emphasizes inquiry-based, self-directed, and constructivist learning environments that foster student engagement, autonomy, and cognitive development.
With expertise in curriculum design, instructional methodologies, eLearning, and assessment strategies, Dr. Watson has been pivotal in training educators and developing professional development processes that support active learning and authentic assessment across various educational settings. Her work in assessment and program evaluation has involved developing plans and instruments to assess student learning and program effectiveness and has figured prominently in ensuring compliance with accreditation standards.
As a consultant, Dr. Watson has advised on the development and implementation of courseware and corresponding pedagogical practices for grades K-20 across nationwide education initiatives.
Dr. Watson's research interests include the use of AI in K-12 teaching and learning environments, the role of pedagogy in learner cognition, and the development of problem-based, interdisciplinary curricula. She is a prolific presenter and author, contributing to conferences and publications on topics such as ePortfolios, educational technology, and pedagogical best practices.
As an author, Dr. Watson brings a wealth of knowledge and practical insights to her writing, making her an invaluable resource for K-12 teachers seeking to enhance their teaching practices and improve student outcomes. Dr. Watson currently serves as an administrative director in the Department of Computer Science at Virginia Tech.
